About Karen VanDam Michmerhuizen:

Drawing has always been a part of my life. Often in my elementary school years my teacher would chide me for drawing. Thinking that my assignments were pushed aside, she would pinch my then-skinny little arm and ask if my school work was finished. Attending a two-room rural school with two teachers who had the enormous task of teaching all the subjects to four grade levels, art was not on the menu except for the rare occasions which were the last half-hour of the school week. It was my favorite part of school!

My high school at that time did not offer “art instruction” as a subject. We had an “Art Club” but that was the whole of it. Fast-forward many years to the present. Marriage, four children, full-time academic secretary, alas, the youngest child graduates from college! Free at last! To pursue my love for art. For the past fifteen years I have embraced art, making it as much a part of my life as possible.

That is why I call myself a “Late Bloomer.” Mostly self-taught, I want to encourage anyone who thinks she or he doesn’t have time, talent, etc. to get going and paint. Join groups, read art magazines, take classes, and when a painting turns into mud, scrape and begin again.
