Featured Artist in February
The Cotswold’s in England is an enchanting place for most people. For Chris Brown it is an artist’s dream. During a recent trip there, he was enthralled with the scenery that kept popping up around every bend in the country road. The rolling countryside, the narrow lanes, the quaint villages and the wooly sheep have made their way across the Atlantic onto Brown’s oil pastel works. Brown captures the charm and tranquility of the old world in each of his pieces of art. It’s hard for him to identify a favorite subject when faced with all the choices. Is it the thatched roofs, tea room, stone walls, pub signs, narrow footpaths, flowering gardens, topiary hedges or the acres and acres of sheep?
Brown grew up in an artistic household. His mother, an artist herself, coached and mentored her son. Art supplies were abundant in cupboards and shelves during his childhood. Although exposed to many mediums, even as an art major in college, he always leaned toward oil pastels because of the look, feel and texture on the paper. As the owner of Pereddies Restaurant for close to 30 years, Brown has been able to express his artistic side in other areas as well.
See Brown’s series of oil pastels highlighting a journey through the charming Cotswold’s at Washington Square Art Gallery throughout the month of February. Opening reception is Friday, February 3, 5-8pm.
Located at 453 Washington Ave, Holland (next to Pereddies Restaurant), the gallery’s hours are: Wed & Thur 11-6pm and Fri & Sat 10-8pm.
